    Romanian Berthier Carbine Conversions

Romanian had more than a million rifles in its inventory after World War One, but they were mused between Mannlicher 88/90, Mannlicher 95, Mosin Nagant, and Berthier patterns - and they were almost all rifles and not carbines. In order to make practical use of all these arms, it was decided to allocate them geographically rather than try to standardize on one single type. The southern state of Wallachia got the guns in 8mm Lebel; Berthier rifles (obtained from Franc in 1916 to rebuild the Romanian Army) and Hotchkiss and Chauchat machine guns.

To address the shortage of carbines, long rifles were cut down. For the Berthiers, this conversion left the original rear sight intact. The original muzzle was cut off, bored out, and sleeved over the new muzzle, allowing the carbine to use the standard original Berthier rifle bayonet. The front sight was topped with a windage-adjustable barleycorn. The rear sling swivel was removed, and replaced with a sling bar in the left side of the stock. Finally, the bolt handle was bent down.

A total of approximately 9,500 Berthiers were converted into carbines this way in the mid/late 1930s, with 9,200 of them completed as of 1938. Very few would survive World War Two however, and they are very scarce today both inside Romania and elsewhere.

Thanks to the King Ferdinand I Military Museum for giving me access to this example, and to A.N.C.A. for coordinating the visit! If you are in Bucharest, make sure to stop in and visit the museum:

Montigny Parlour Pistols: When indoor shooting was cool, with firearms expert Jonathan Ferguson.

Relatively small, but packed with history - this week's episode explores the Belgian Montigny system all-metal breech-loading needle-firing parlour pistol. Try saying that fast three times.

Zagi: Croatia HK's a Sten Gun

The Zagi is one of the more prolific of the Croatian homeland War submachine guns. It was developed with the intention of making substantial numbers, and a lot of capital was put into the PHTO (First Croatian Arms Factory, or Prva Hrvatska Tvornica Oružja) for its manufacture. This included polymer molding tools to produce the lower frame, buttplate, and pistol grip for the gun (all of which were based on HK style parts).

Mechanically, the Zagi design is a Sten gun internally, with Sten bolt and fire control group. The stock is HK is style, but attaches to the receiver like a Sten stock. It is chambered for 9x19mm, and uses standard MP40 magazines. A suppressed version was also made with an MP5SD-style vented barrel, but I don't have access to one of those to show today.

Total production ended up being about 2000 guns in 1991. They were used in Croatia, but rendered obsolete fairly quickly as more modern arms were acquired. A few years later, many were sent to Bosnia as military aid in the Bosnian fight for independence (and the Bosnians actually produced their own copy as well).

A big thanks to the Croatian Police Museum (Muzej Policije) in Zagreb for giving me access to film this cool piece for you! Check them out at: https://muzej-policije.gov.hr

Further thanks to the Sisak Municipal Museum for access to their preproduction example!

The pinfire game gun - 07/02/20 05:39 PM
There are wonderful threads on this board that follow individual makers, and models. In keeping with the spirit of sharing, and to provide a different distraction in these trying times, I am starting a thread on the pinfire game gun.

When I started researching and collecting British pinfire game guns some 25 years ago, there were few suitable reference books, the Internet was a plaything for University academics, and knowledge was something painstakingly gathered. Now there are amazing print and on-line references on British gunmakers and gunmaking, and sharing and exchanging information on-line is commonplace. While the research part has gotten easier, the gaps in knowledge are still there.

I expect some followers of this board already know quite a bit about pinfires. Many of you will have one or several in your collections, and I hope you will contribute to this thread. To those who are very familiar with the story of the British pinfire, I ask for your patience -- something in these posts will surely be new to you. I will try to cover as many makers, types and features as I can to make this interesting. I will be adding to this thread every few days.

So, here's going right back to the beginning of British breech-loaders.

    Denmark's m/75: A Lease-to-Own Rifle

Denmark's adoption of the H&K G3 is a rather odd story. First off, the Danes adopted the m/66 H&K as its sniper/DMR rifle in 1966, while retaining the M1 Garand as its standard service rifle. Not until 1973 do they decide to update the M1s, and when they do a. major rifle test, the M16 wins. However, they aren't really excited about the prospect of adopting the M16, so they delay the decision for two years and then decide to simply lease rifles from the Bundeswehr. The Home Guard has already been using the G3 as a sniper's rifle for nearly a decade, so they might as well use the same platform...and so what the Danish military gets are generally the oldest, earliest G3s in West German inventory on loan. These would remain in service (albeit with periodic rebuilds as needed) until 1995, when they are replaced by the Diemaco C7.

Inside the Trigger Mechanism of the Real-Life Halo M90 Shotgun

The real-life Halo M90 shotgun I featured previously was actually built on a left-handed 870 Wingmaster. When I did the Christmas "historical" video about it, I didn't show the actual internal mechanics, and I figured some of you folks would be interested to see how the trigger was relayed from the top of the receiver down to the bottom...

Early Development of the MAC 1950 Pistol

Today we have a short look at two of the predecessors of the French MAC 1950 service pistol. The first is the Type SE MAS 1948, which retains many of the characteristics of the previous MAS 1935 pistols. After that is a preproduction MAC 1950 (serial number F 20), which has the same style of safety catch as the pre-M1 MAS 1935, as well as early wooden grips. Then, of course, is the standard pattern of the normal MAC 1950.

Many thanks to the IRCGN (Institut de Recherche Criminelle de la Gendarmerie Nationale) for allowing me access to film this progression for you!

CZ's "Beautiful" PDW: A Sadly Unfinished Project

In this episode of TFBTV, @JamesReeves is at CZ headquarters to talk about the CZ "Beautiful" PDW. The "Beautiful" is a secret CZ project that was never finished and never revealed to the public - until today. The "Beautiful" was given this nickname probably because it is aesthetically hideous, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and James and Karl both think the "Beautiful" is one gorgeous PDW. Will this ever be finished and released? Probably not, but at least we get to share it with you.

The left-handed SA80: So everyone can fire a really bad rifle. With firearm expert Jonathan Ferguson

The SA80 is famed for its disastrous introduction into British Army service, even inspiring unofficial t-shirts to be worn by soldiers stating it was, " Designed by the Incompetent; Issued by the Uncaring; Carried by the Unfortunate."

During development, the British Army gave serious consideration to manufacturing a left-handed version for up to 10% of the total weapons produced. Jonathan explains what happened to these plans and this early version of the rifle.

    Wilkinson Arms "Linda"

The Linda is a semiauto 9mm pistol that just exudes 1980s aesthetics. It was made along with a carbine version called the Terry, by Wilkinson Arms of California (later Idaho). Both were named after daughters of the company founder, Ray Wilkinson. He would also later produce a Sherry pistol named after a third daughter and a Diane pistol, named after his second wife. The Linda uses a telescoping bolt similar in concept to the Uzi or its Czech predecessors, and it a surprisingly accurate gun, thanks to its fixed barrel and sights.
